The purpose of the Department of Philology, founding Department of the UoI, is both to provide academic and educational training to young Greek language teachers, give them the necessary scientific tools to help them later in their career, and get them in touch with all aspects and forms of language, from the study of ancient Greek thinking and literature to modern Greek literature, in order to contribute to their scientific and spiritual fulfillment.
Philology is a multilevel science, open to many connections, from the restoration of a text to its most thorough interpretation, personalized in as many parts as the number of texts under study, but methodologically unified and open to the theory of artistic language, literature and history of ideas. Its syllabus consists of a broad database of texts, from Ancient classic works in Greek and Latin, to classicizing and non-classicizing works of the Byzantine times, and finally to modern Greek literature.
The Department awards a degree in three specializations: Classical Philology, Medieval and Modern Greek Philology and Linguistics.
Compulsory minimum period of study: eight (8) semesters.
