The Department of Materials Science and Engineering (est. 1999, Presidential Decree 207, OGG (A) 179/06.09.1999) is the only Materials Science and Engineering Department in Greece with a 5-year course of study, and belongs to the School of Engineering since the establishment of the School in the University of Ioannina, in 2017 (Law 4452, OGG (A) 17/15.02.2017).
The Department’s purpose is to provide students 5 years of high-level education and training in Materials Science and Technology. Students must write a final thesis as part of their study.
The educational process seeks to provide students the knowledge they need to create, study and design technology materials useful for the development of society. This calls for teaching methods that include theoretical and lab classes on the structure, properties and process of materials. When students graduate they will become engineers capable of designing products in the best possible way for each application based on the selection of appropriate materials. They will be able to analyze the relationship between the structure and properties of a material, which is the essence of Materials Science. They will also be able to apply different processes in order to alter the structure of materials to give them any desired attributes, which is the essence of Materials Technology.
