Interdepartmental Postgraduate Programme (Master) in Materials Chemistry and Technology
The Department of Materials Science and Engineering has been offering a Postgraduate Course since the 2004-2005 academic year that leads to a Master’s Degree (MSc) in Materials Chemistry and Technology, and lasts two years. This course offers the opportunity for a PhD after graduation. This is an Interdepartmental Postgraduate Course, with the participation of the Departments of Materials Science and Engineering and Chemistry, University of Ioannina, in cooperation with the General Department of Physics – Chemistry and Materials Technology, School of Technological Applications, TEI of Athens.
The purpose of this Master’s degree is to train scientific experts in Materials Chemistry and Technology, to provide its graduates with a solid scientific background, experience and expertise in this cutting-edge technical field, especially in methods of synthesis, designation and modern applications on materials, such as ceramics, polymers, metals and compounds. This course is expected to create Scientists and Engineers with the required skills and knowledge in the field of materials for a successful career in the private, public and academic sector (Universities/TEIs), or in research centres that need expert scientific staff capable of improving and/or contributing to the discovery and use of new improved materials, eventually leading to Greece’s technological and economic development.
This Master’s degree was reformed in 2014 and lasts one year. It starts in November and admits a maximum of thirty (30) postgraduate students. It includes one academic semester of compulsory attendance, and one semester for the Master thesis that leads to the award of a Master’s degree (MSc). Postgraduate students shall carry out their research at the UoI Departments of Materials Science & Engineering and Chemistry, and at labs under the instruction of researchers and faculty members.
Postgraduate Programme (Master) in Advanced Materials.
The UoI Department of Materials Science and Engineering has been offering a Postgraduate Course since the 2014-2015 academic year (OGG 2121/issue B/1-8-2014) that leads to a Master’s Degree (MSc) in Advanced Materials and lasts one year.
Meeting the requirements to boost scientific knowledge and encourage research towards the new direction of Materials Science and Engineering, which, albeit new in Greece, significantly contributes to the development and promotion of research abroad, and is an integral Engineering specialization in almost every Technical School, the UoI Department of Materials Science and Engineering establishes a Postgraduate Course in Advanced Materials.
There are two ways someone can undertake doctoral research in the UoI Department of Materials Science and Engineering:
- Directly to the Department
The Department of Materials Science and Engineering directly admits postgraduate students who wish to undertake doctoral research (without the involvement of the Interdepartmental Postgraduate Programme).
The selection of postgraduate students to be admitted is decided by the Department’s General Assembly, in Special Composition, according to the provisions of Law 2083/92, article 14.
- Through the Postgraduate Programme
Upon successful completion of the Postgraduate Course and the award of a Master’s Degree (MSc) in Materials Chemistry and Engineering, this Postgraduate Programme provides its graduates the opportunity to conduct doctoral research.
