The UoI Cultural Centre of the Peristeras Monastery in Dourouti is located at the renovated and widely known Monastery of St. George of Dourouti. The monastery towers the east side of the Dourouti hill. Its view reminds the town’s citizens of the times gone by, when the monastery was a place of pilgrimage and celebration on St. George’s Day. It inspires and motivates the university community to take action in fields that contribute both to the protection and the exploitation and promotion of the wider ecological and cultural environment. The Cultural Centre goes under the official name of the Holy Monastery of St. George Peristeras of Dourouti. The St. George monastery complex probably owes its double name to the merger of the two (out of three) monasteries on that hill: The Monastery of St. Paraskevi of Dourouti and the Monastery of St. George Peristeras. These two monasteries were merged, together with their names and assets in 1902.

Since its foundation in 1964, the University of Ioannina has smoothly integrated into the social and cultural environment of Epirus. The result was a strong interaction that “prescribed” the terms for the foundation and eventual promotion of cultural expression and creation. Consequently, two museums and a collection of artifacts were established, which play a key role in research and aesthetics. They are also useful for teaching and educational activities, targeted at our University’s students and primary/ high schools of Ioannina and the wider region.
The UoI Literature and Art Committee was established in 2001 with the opening of the event and screening hall, which was named “Space of Literature and Art”. In 2011, the Senate decided to rename it “Dimitris Chatzis Space of Literature and Art”, in memory of the author Dimitris Chatzis, who was born in Ioannina. The Committee’s main purpose is to work in an academic spirit in order to provide all university community members with access to aesthetic culture and to promote the creative role of student groups.
